Chapter Nine

Ren’s eyes blinked open in the early morning darkness and he stared into his unfamiliar surroundings, momentarily disoriented until he remembered that he was in Kylie’s warm, homey bedroom, that she had finally permitted him access to her home, and that he had spent the night in her bed and in her arms. She had taken him to the place she called home, had let him into the sanctuary she shared only with her son, made sweet, sweet love to him in the one place in the world where she should be the safest from all outside threats.

And he was about to get up and search the place.

Ren felt bile and last night’s pizza rise in his throat as he looked over at the sleeping woman. They had gotten separated in the night, but she was still close enough that he could feel the warmth of her body and hear her soft breathing, and he was so tempted to reach out and give her innocently beautiful face a kiss. But, as badly as he wanted to tell Sawyer and the DEA to take their job and shove it and to walk out of this house, he still had a job to do and he was going to do it. Kylie, I’m sorry. He thought she was innocent, hoped she was innocent, but it was his job to make sure.

He eased out of bed and was just pulling on his jeans when his phone vibrated and a text scrolled across the screen. Searched A, all drugs gone. Where are u?

Ren grabbed the phone out of his pocket. K’s. Going to search, prob not her, with her all day and night.

Look anyway!

Ren shut off the phone and dropped it down into his duffel. Feeling like a Judas, he pulled on his T-shirt and quietly left the room. He prayed to God she was innocent. But even if she wasn’t, even if she was as guilty as they came, what they had between them, at least what they had between them in bed, was real. She did do things to him that no other woman had ever done before, investigation or no. That had been on his mind last night when he’d made love to her so desperately: that no matter what she was or what she did, she had touched him in a way that no other woman ever had or could.

Kylie rolled over into the slats of sunlight coming through the lowered blinds and scrambled to find her buzzing phone. Damn, what time was it? She’d meant to get up and cook Ren’s breakfast before she sent him on his way, but she’d overslept and that was probably Lexi calling to say she was on her way home with the kids, so she would either have to send Ren home with no shower or food, or drop her pretense in front of Danny and the girls. She fumbled around in her handbag and the pockets of her dress before she
